A shift in biodiversity conservation

We work to Reconnect society with nature
and protect what it has to offer

Our novel approach eliminates artificial boundaries

Joining forces to preserve nature

By evaluating the existing models of protection and governance, we gather the best tools for a new social-ecological approach that ends with the current habitat fragmentation and landscape homogenisation. We study value conflicts to build coherence among organisations for a consistent management of biodiversity conservation.

New tools for a fresh look at nature

Identifying and assessing biodiversity preservation

We are carrying out a holistic evaluation on the effectiveness of area protection through cross-scale analysis in four case studies. We:

Policy analysis
Conduct policy analysis at the national and regional level to source novel conservation modes for an effective and responsible environmental governance.
Virtual landscapes
Simulate virtual landscapes to test how fragmentation and functional connectivity affects biodiversity.
Run surveys
Run surveys in the case study areas to identify how nature connects with people.
Interviews
Address social-ecological conflicts around protected areas by doing interviews with diverse organisations.
Promote connectivity
Build a joint framework based on the information gathered in the case study areas to promote connectivity between physical, social and institutional boundaries around biodiversity protection.
Informed policymaking
Create a communication channel between scientists and lawmakers to ensure an informed policymaking.

A real impact on nature

Reconnect will provide measurable policy, societal and scientific outcomes

  • Our vision of biodiversity protection will help accomplish the target of at least 30% of the planet covered by conservation measures by 2030 of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework established by the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.

  • We will contribute to the Trans-European Nature Network initiative and to the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 to protect nature and reverse the degradation of ecosystems.

  • With the creation of a comprehensive architecture of analysis we will promote an efficient management of institutional, physical and social boundaries associated with biodiversity conservation.
  • Our supply of deep-learning approaches will achieve an enhanced prediction and assessment of biodiversity levels and fragmentation of landscapes.
